It was Arunagirinathar who beautifully recited the history of this majestic city as well as the temple of Lord Arunachaleswarar in his work. The Chola had ruled the city and it were them who had done a lot of beautifying work for the place. Some major facts about the metropolis are embossed on the temple prakaram walls and copper plate words. It has the largest temple of Lord Shiva and his wife Parvati. A great devotee of Lord Shiva named Ballala had contributed majorly to the temple.
